LCD display screen works by injecting liquid crystal molecules into two parallel glass plates with conductive coating, and changing the arrangement of liquid crystal molecules by applying electricity. This creates areas of opaque and transparent parts which form irregular patterns. With the addition of a light filter between the two glass plates, it becomes possible to display images. Now, let's take a closer look at the key parts of an LCD display screen.

The working state of liquid crystal molecules in LCD display screen

It is a complex substance in between solids and liquids, consisting of structures that appear to be square-shaped. When there is no electric current, liquid crystal molecules are in a state of inactivity and parallel to each other, resulting in no display on the LCD display screen. After being injected into the glass with grooves, liquid crystal molecules will intersect with other molecules in a 90-degree twist.

The arrangement of liquid crystal in LCD display screen

When the molecules of liquid crystal are arranged in a north-south direction on one plane, the molecules on the other plane are arranged in an east-west direction. The molecules trapped between the two planes are forced into a 90-degree twist. Light travels along the alignment direction of the molecules, so when it passes through the liquid crystal, it also undergoes a 90-degree twist. When an electric current is applied, the molecules realign, and the light passes through the screen without any twist.

The light filter of LCD display screen

LCD display screens heavily rely on polarizing filters and light itself. Natural light is emitted in random directions. Polarizing filters are a series of parallel lines that get thinner and thinner, forming a mesh that blocks all light that is not parallel. The lines of the polarizing filters are perpendicular to one another, and when aligned with light twisted by the liquid crystal, allow it to pass through.
